Glest was developed by the Glest Team, originally a college project, but it later became a full-scale open source engine which has expanded to over a million downloads on sourceforge alone! While its first release was a simple, but playable, game without modding capabilities, it later expanded, redoing many of the models for Magitech and releasing a fully modable Glest, as well as opening the G3D format, its modeling format, and the GBM format, its map format. Its final release was at 3.2.2, but it is still developed through two separate branches, the [[Glest Advanced Engine]] and [[MegaGlest]].
